Methods of Cleaning

Farrowing Arks

1

Remove all sows and piglets from the farrowing paddock.  Remove all remaining feed from the feeder.  Ideally manage the farrowing paddock so that the feeder is empty when the sow's leave

2

Dismantle each farrowing arc and fender, turn over and move to one side

3

Examine straw for any additional/missed/dead piglets and complete farrowing records

4

Using a dairy brush and a yard brush remove all faecal and straw material from inside the farrowing arc and the fender.  Place all material on the old straw bed

5

Burn all straw present in the lying area

6

Leave the farrowing arc and fender upside down for one night

7

Clean out the feeder and water troughs thoroughly.  Turn the water off to the water trough.

8

Disinfect the inside of the farrowing arc, fender, water troughs and feeders. Limewashing could be us

9

Repair farrowing arc, in particular any holes where draughts may enter the arc

10

Rebuild the farrowing arc and fender on a new site

11

Ensure water supply is restored before the farrowing paddock is restocked.
