Farrowing – heating and piglet care

Using a heat mat  (if you are using a light)

 

The following provides guidance for providing heating to the piglet.

 

The important consideration is that the piglet requires an ambient temperature of 30C

The sow/gilt however, requires an ambient temperature of 16-18C

 

1 day pre-farrow

Room temp 20C

Farrowing

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Prepare farrowing area.  Warm up heat pad.

Place 100w lamp over heat pad.  Turn on rear heat lamp

End of farrowing

Room temp 18C

Farrowing to 1st 2 days post-farrowing

Room temp 18C

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Turn off rear heat lamp when farrowing finishes

Remove rear heat lamp.

Farrowing 2days end of first week

Room temp 18C

Farrowing to weaning

Room temp 16C

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Turn off 100w lamp over heat mat

Consider combining litters after day 14.
