Post Breeding
Behaviour
In the time 5
to 10 minutes post-service the sow adopts two behaviour patterns. |
She lies down
on her own and sleeps |
She continues
to be active and will continue to try and mount or talk to other sows |
The immediate post-service behaviour is important to
note. Early indications are that the
sow which is quite and sleeps in the 5 to 10 minutes post-service is more
likely to become pregnant. |
Is your breeding area adapted to allowing this behaviour pattern. Do you negatively stimulate the sow immediately
post-service. This will upset her uptake of semen to
the oviducts where it is safe. |
Post-service this sow was forced into an optional
stall. But was the disturbance to her
breeding behaviour good for reproduction – she returned at 21 days! |
After 24 hours post natural service the seminal gel plug is passed from the sow. The actual purpose of the plug is still unsure. |
