Post Breeding Behaviour

In the time 5 to 10 minutes post-service the sow adopts two behaviour patterns.

She lies down on her own and sleeps

She continues to be active and will continue to try and mount or talk to other sows

The immediate post-service behaviour is important to note.  Early indications are that the sow which is quite and sleeps in the 5 to 10 minutes post-service is more likely to become pregnant.

Is your breeding area adapted to allowing this behaviour pattern. Do you negatively stimulate the sow immediately post-service. This will upset her uptake of semen to the oviducts where it is safe.

Post-service this sow was forced into an optional stall.  But was the disturbance to her breeding behaviour good for reproduction – she returned at 21 days!

After 24 hours post natural service the seminal gel plug is passed from the sow.

The actual purpose of the plug is still unsure.
