Pig flow hole
discovered at weaning
There is little excuse for this failure in management. The ability to find females to be bred depend on how long between the pig flow hole is discovered and the required breeding date. The longer the time the better.
However, while the options for filling the hole are now limited there are options available. Note an empty farrowing place is 10-12 pigs not weaned – a fortune

Gilts in the breeding pool |
Cycling gilts unknown stage– inject with PGF2α and the PG600 3 days later |
Cycling gilt over 11 days post-oestrus - inject with PGF2α and the PG600 3 days later |
Cycling gilts between oestrus and 11 days – ignore. |
Cycling gilts in oestrus - mate |

Finishing gilts |
Gilt which has not been exposed to a boar around 100-110kg |
Immediately expose to a boar – about 50% will cycle within 4 days |
Breed as normal – ideally use a boar as well as AI |
Consider PG600 at first signs of oestrus |
3 |
Cull sows |
Do not cull any sows – breed all sows possible. Culling can be completed at pregnancy checking |
4 |
Sows farrowing |
If possible wean 24 hours after farrowing and place in breeding pool |
PG600 3 days after “weaning” |
5 |
Pregnant sows and gilts |
Abort with PGF2α – use double the dose. Inject first dose day of weaning |
Inject second dose 6 hours later |
Inject PG600 4 days later |
Breed when sow or gilt in oestrus |
Use a boar and AI to enhance fertility |
