Sperm move out of the resting pool every 3-4 days

They take 35-42 days to develop and mature

They are then stored.  Max concentration reached in 4-5 days of none use.

                                                                                                                                  

 

 

Factors that can affect spermatogenesis

 

Heat

32C for 2 days – i.e. Summer time

Pyrexia

40C for one day – Erysipelas or Swine Influenza

Disease

Brucella suis

Feeding

Over feeding – fat boars

It is difficult to affect semen production by feeding.  Cb and Zn may be raised as micronutrients.

Size of testes

A boar with larger testes tends to produce more semen

People

A conscientious stockperson with warm hands will maximize semen output
