Swine Production Management - Biosecurity Manual

Fumigation
(This is a highly dangerous operation. Read and understand the instructions before starting to fumigate.)

  • Always work accompanied
  • The ambient air temperature inside the building has to be above 65 degrees F (18 degrees C) preferably above 80 degrees F (27 degrees C)
  • Wear water-proofs, gloves and chemical goggles and suitable respirator
  • Damp down the building including the roof and fan shafts
  • Per 100 m3 use: 200 ml formaldehyde (40%) and 90 gm Potassium permanganate
  • Close off all air inlets and outlets
  • Place the required Potassium permanganate into metal containers
  • In large buildings, several metal containers must be evenly distributed throughout the house
  • Be prepared to get out of the room immediately when the formaldehyde is added to the Potassium permanganate, as it is highly dangerous to inhale the fumes
  • Pour the required amount of 40% Formaldehyde into a wide necked container
  • Pour the 40% Formaldehyde on to the Potassium permanganate powder
  • Get out of the room and close the doors
  • Place sign over doors warning all others to stay out of the house
  • Do not re-enter the house for 24 hours
  • After 12 hours, ventilate the house for an additional 12 hours before entering in the building. Wear a suitable respirator when first entering the house to remove the containers
